I know what you mean, those evil gun rays make me want to rape and
kill.
Thomas Hamilton had a history of severe mental illness and was
prohibited from owning a firearm. His licence was issued anyway,
because local law enforcement couldn't be bothered to do it's job. You
say the gun made him violent?

Not so. What you expect is to have the means of defending yourself.
It's not a panacea, only a fool would believe that, but it's better
than nothing.

About this we agree, but helplessness is not the alternative I would
choose.

According to a USDOJ study, armed victims are half as likely to be
injured in an attack.
